Yaumati and 2 miles beyond.

Yaumati lies on the main road to
the New Territories and has a Railway Station of its own.
At present the principal thoroughfare is Shanghai Street
at the back of Kowloon Marine Lots 29, 30 and 31, but a new main road 100 feet wide (Nathan Road) is being constructed on the in-
land side of Shanghai Street, which may therefore become less
important in the future.

On the sea side of Kowloon Marine Lots 29, 30 and 31 the
shore is curved, the lots being situate near the centre of the
bay facing West: to the North and South the sea-bed has been
reclaimed with the result that the portion of the harbour in
front of the lots, is in a sort of pocket. (see accompanying map dated 23/5/11).

Formerly boats could come up to the Praya wall, but
owing to the depositing of waste material on the foreshore
tide no longer reaches the Praya Wall: a long bamboo jetty runs
seawards from the Northern front of Kowloon Marine Lot 29, and
is much used by Steam Ferry Boats which carry a very heavy
traffic.

The Reclamation of the "pocket" opposite these lote has
long been desired by the Government, and in 1901 negotiations
were opened with the Lot Owners with a view to constructing
such a reclamation on mutual terms as was done with the great
reclamation of the City of Victoria in 1889.
10. The lots had however been split up into a number of sec-
tions, and the matter was further complicated by the fact that
the shore forms a re-entering angle, and the only possible re-
clamation has a less sea frontage than the old sea frontage
whilst the lateral roads converge as they approach the sea, and
the depth of the reclamation almost equals its width.
After some years the Land Officer abandoned the negotiation
